Board of Directors

Col Duthie (Executive Chair)

Col’s commitment to social change infuses the work he does to facilitate cohesion and clarity among senior leaders and change agents. He started his career as a senior high school mathematics teacher and within the com­munity sector, he then developed a consulting practice to express his belief in the power of business to make a positive impact in the world.

Col has subsequently worked with the executive teams and boards of some of Australia and the South Pa­cific’s best known social purpose organisations. He has served as Chair and Director on many boards and, in addition to his Executive Chair role at donkey wheel, is currently a Director of Ethical Property Australia, STREAT Ltd, and the Give Where You Live Foundation (Geelong). Col holds a BSc and DipEd and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Elizabeth Jennings (Director)

Elizabeth has been Chief Financial Officer at Victoria Legal Aid since 2011. Prior to this she was the Head of Strategic Finance at World Vision Australia. She has held senior financial roles in government and not-for-profit sectors. Her commitment to social justice is reflected in a prior board role at the Leprosy Mission Aus­tralia. Elizabeth holds degrees in Commerce and Arts, a Master of Assessment and Evaluation from the University of Melbourne, and a Master of Business from Swinburne University. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Dave Piggott (Director)

Dave was a successful business owner in the healthcare industry for 14 years, before selling to Telstra. Wanting to give something back to the community, he sought a position in the NFP sector - hence his directorship at donkey wheel. David brings practical experience as an IT en­trepreneur, and general management competen­cies to his commitment to making a difference via the donkey wheel board. He has a partic­ular focus on customer engagement, product management, sales and marketing. Dave is currently the Business Development Manager for hospitals at Telstra Health and holds a Mas­ters in IT (Open Systems) and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Jessie Taylor (Director)

Jessie Taylor is the Associate Director of Chambers at Victoria Legal Aid. Jessie has worked as a barrister and Public Defender (Civil Justice) since 2011. Prior to that she was Associate to Justice Mordecai Bromberg in the Federal Court of Australia.  She is a past President of Liberty Victoria (2016-2018), and has previously sat on the board of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. She is co-writer and producer of the films 'We Will Be Remembered For This' (2007) and 'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea' (2011).

Jessie is a sought-after writer, speaker and commentator on human rights and refugee issues.

Paul Steele

Paul is the CEO of donkey wheel. He is the co-founder of The Difference Incubator, a prominent incubator of investable social enterprises in Australia, and also the co-founder of Benefit Capital, an organisation that works with other groups to access and use all forms of capital in order to ‘do good and make money’. Paul is also the co-founder and an executive director of Ethical Property Australia – a property development and management company seeking to create spaces where organisations can come together to make a difference. He also advises, mentors and coaches business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Paul is passionate about helping people make the world a better place, focusing on the development of leadership, strategy and innovation.

Col Duthie

Col’s commitment to social change infuses the work he does to facilitate cohesion and clarity among senior leaders and change agents. He started his career as a senior high school mathematics teacher and within the com­munity sector, he then developed a consulting practice to express his belief in the power of business to make a positive impact in the world.

In the 20 years since then, Col has worked with senior leaders within dozens of for-purpose organisations and loves helping better not only work better, but ultimately to do better work.

Jacqui Ralley

Jacqui is donkey wheel’s Executive Assistant and Program Officer, bringing to these roles a dedication to organisation, a flair for finance and a capacity to create order out of chaos. Jacqui has extensive experience in finance, admin, governance and executive support - working with a diverse range of corporates and not-for-profits.

She enjoys working at donkey wheel alongside like-minded people who want to make the world a better place. It also doesnt hurt that her role is based in the truly beautiful and historic donkey wheel house.

Craig Brown

Craig has a background in local church ministry, denominational leadership and working with NGOs. Since 2016, he is engaged in running a writing and editing business – Amplify Your Voice – and has working on a range of projects, including the writing of a history book, coaching leaders on how to write and communicate better, and working with Benefit Capital.

Most recently, Craig has taken on the role of storyteller at donkey wheel, recording the stories and learnings that emerge from donkey wheel initiatives. He is passionate about people accessing their potential to make a better world. 

Founders

The Brunner family

donkey wheel was set up in 2004 by John and Jasmine, Claire, Nic and Jon. They infused the foundation with their passion for a better world and their quirky creativity gave donkey wheel its formative tag line: think different, act different, make a different difference.

It was Claire who became the driving force behind donkey wheel and her relentless quest for positive change and her fierce uncompromising view of the world gave donkey wheel its soul.
